Key terminologies

Some key terminologies and abbreviations used in AoL/OBE system have been explained below

​

Competency or Competency Goals (CG): Knowledge and/or skills that a student is expected to acquire after completion of an academic program

​

Course Learning Objectives (CLO) or Course Objectives (CO): Knowledge and/or skills that a student is expected to acquire after completion of a particular course

​

Curriculum mapping: The process of mapping Competency Goals to the courses in a program

​​

BE/ME/EE: This refers to 'Below Expectation' / 'Meeting Expectation' / Exceeding Expectation' - categorization of a student as per the performance they demonstrate against a particular CG or CLO

​

Attainment Levels: Percentage of students who were found to be meeting or exceeding expectation (BE or ME) in an AoL measurement cycle

​

Measurement Cycle - Refers to the completion of one set of measurements of attainment levels of all competency goals of a program and identification of improvement actions to be taken subsequently

​

Improvement Actions - Actions decided to be taken for the purpose of improving the attainment level of a CG, typically taken for those CG, which falled short of target attainment levels. Improvement actions can be of two types, Curriculum Improvement Action and Process Improvement Action

​

Curriculum Improvement - Any modifications or addition in the program curriculum or course design are considered as curriculum improvement actions

​​

Process Improvement - Any modification in the academic processes, such as admission crietria, examination rules, attendance rules etc. are considered as process improvement

​

Closing of Loop - refers to the improvement actions taken based on attainment levels and then reassessing to verify whether those improvements were effective. Typically takes two measurement cycle​
